A group of over 30 firefighters at Madison Fire & Rescue have filed a lawsuit against the city, alleging serious errors in the implementation of the department’s pay scale — errors that they say have resulted in “major financial losses” for firefighters.
According to the lawsuit, the ordinance that established the new pay scale created a structure under which many firefighters were paid significantly less than what they believe they were owed. The suit brings two primary claims: deprivation of employment rights and breach of contract.
Firefighters argue that the new starting salary of $44,000 is lower than comparable departments in the region and that the pay scale implementation, particularly for department veterans, fails to reflect prior service, seniority, or fair market standards. As a result, the plaintiffs say they have suffered substantial monetary damages.
