Pasco County Fire Rescue Moving to 42-Hour Workweek

Pasco County Fire Rescue is pioneering a significant change in firefighter scheduling, transitioning from the conventional 24 hours on followed by 48 hours off shift schedule, to a 24‑hour on and 72‑hour off shift schedule. The new shift schedule will result in a 42-hour average workweek for the county’s firefighters. According to Fox 13, the new shift schedule aims to enhance firefighters’ quality of life, improve job performance, and promote recruitment and retention.

Despite the fact that the new schedule will not be implemented until January, the benefits of the new schedule are already noticeable. According to union officials, the department is already attracting experienced firefighters from neighboring departments interested in transferring to the department. Additionally, overtime pay is anticipated to be cut in half during the first year of the new schedule.
